Blog Response #6

In all five novels, the main character or characters face adversity in one way or another.  Describe how you view the character's challenges in your book, and talk about how your character handles the hardships and struggles.  If you were in your main character/characters situation, how would you handle yourself?  What would you do?

  1. In A Thousand Splendid Suns Mariam goes through a lot of hard things like being unwanted and forced to marry Rasheed. She feels lonely after losing her babies. Mariam deals with her problems by staying quiet and doing what she is told. If I was her, I would just leave and never talk to them again.

    2. My character also is forced to do things like leaving his home and having to give everything to the Germans. My character is afraid to speak out or voice his opinion if fear of being beaten or killed by the Germans

    3. I agree and i am also reading the book a thousand splendid suns , if i was Mariam i would try and leave or escape, staying quiet isn't always the best option.

    4. I agree with this because Mariam stays to herself and keeps her emotions private. She does as she's told and hides her true feelings.

I have been reading a long way gone and the main character ishmael beah who is a 13 years old and the situation he has been through with the death and situation where he has been left to his own thought as he had spent a month in a forest alone and lost. I definitely could not handle the situations he has been put through even at an older age I could not comprehend or be able to stay as calm as he has in that situation

    4. I agree with what you were saying how you wouldn't be able to handle what he has gone through. It seems like there could be a lot of trauma that comes from these situations and i definitely wouldn't be able to do it either.

    5. Yeah I agree, I'm not sure how he does it. I certainly would be able to handle what he endured.

  3. In the book Night, Elie faces adversity from the German soldiers. The soldiers completely take away all of Elie's moral by taking his home him, stripping away all his belongings from him, and making him work like a dog. Throughout the story Elie handles his hardships by staying close to his father and by following the Jewish religion the best he can even though the German officers make it almost impossible to do. If I was Elie I would continue to stick with my father the best i could and try to remain sane.

    2. I agree with that. Family is really all they have so I would stick with my Father as close as I can for protection food and just overall advice. Sanity is for sure a hard thing to maintain in the ghettos with the things they see and the food they have to eat.

    3. I agree, I would stay as close to my father as possible because his dad would be able to help him get through it and be strong about it.

    4. I would do the same thing is stay with my father as best I could because then you would fell safer and you would not have to worrier about where your father is at in the camp and if he's still alive.

  4. The Character in my book Night does the same the same thing by keeping busy so he doesn't have to think about all the people the Germans have killed and burned. Elie fears that if he doesn't keep his mind active he will go insane from seeing all his fellow Jewish friends die.

  8. My book is night adversity as his peaceful life in sighet is destroyed and he is forced into ghettos, disgusting trains and eventually the concentration camps. His challenges include fear, separation from his mother and sisters, and witnessing cruelty and death for the first time. Elie handles these hardships by staying close to his father and trying to obey orders so he can survive. If I were in Elie’s situation, I would focus on protecting my family and staying mentally strong to make it through each day.

  10. I am reading the book A thousand splendid suns, and the main character Mariam is forced into marage to a man named Rasheed. Rasheed is 40 to 50 years old and he is abusive towards Mariam calling her names and yelling at her. Mariam handles this with the support of Laila with their bond and friendship that they have. If I was the main character I would fight back or escape from the abuse. I would try to get away in anyway possible because of the abuse.

  11. In the book A Thousand Splendid Suns the two main characters Mariam and Laila face a lot of hardships. Mariam's mother died and she had to live with her father for a bit, who did not want her, he's ashamed of her. She then was shipped off to live with her husband she just met. I feel like Mariam handled things very well considering the circumstances. She was sad and hurt but she still left and went on to be a wife. She tried to put her troubles behind her so she could be a good wife to Rasheed. If that were me in that situation, I would not be able to forget about everything and start a new life just like that. Laila also just lost her parents and her best friend due to the war and bombings. Mariam took Laila in and looked after her while she was injured due to the bombings. Laila does a good job at hiding her feelings or maybe she's just numb. I wouldn't say either of them handles their hardships, they have to deal with it and keep pushing through because they have no other option. They both are trying to pursue and forget about things. If I were in their shoes I'm not sure if I'd be able to handle things as well as they are.

    1. When you say the women in your book don't really handle their hardships, they just push through, I could say the same for the main character in my book, as well. He never had a choice and if he retaliated even once, he'd most likely be killed.

    3. I think Marium handled her situation very well too. Her mother died and she was forced to live with someone random, but still somehow was able to just deal with it. It wouldn't be possible for me to do that either.

    4. The main character in my book also loses his family and he also never really had a way to cope with the things he went through.

  12. The events Elie describes experiencing in Night are so complex and unimaginable, it doesn't ever really click that these things actually happened to someone. Elie handled the camps and whatnot much better than most adults would have, which is really admirable. 16. In The Kite Runner so far, Amir faces challenges mostly with guilt, fear, and wanting his father’s approval. He struggles with how he treated Hassan and has a hard time standing up for himself or others. Instead of facing his problems, Amir often avoids them which makes things worse. If I were in Amir’s situation, I think I would also feel scared, but I would try to be honest and stand up for my friend so I wouldn’t carry that guilt with me.

  18. In the book I Am Malala, there is a lot of fear that comes from the Taliban that makes their community unsafe, also girls not getting the right to have the education they should be able to have. Malala faces these challenges by standing on speaking out for not only herself but for the other females, she also is still going to school. Malala doing this makes the target on her back a lot larger. Her family and the fact that she wants an education is what is pushing her more and more to do the things she's doing. If I was in the situation I'd just stay home, with how brutal the Taliban got and will get would scare me to much to risk my life over school.

  19. in the book Long Way Gone Ishmael faces huge challenges like war, hunger, and being separated from his family. He’s forced to grow up fast and focus on surviving in a dangerous world. At first, he holds onto hope and memories, but as things get worse, he becomes tougher just to stay alive. If I were in his situation, I’d probably be scared and overwhelmed, but I’d try to do what Ishmael does, stay with people I trust and take things one day at a time.

  20. I am reading Night and Elie faces many challenges during the book. The challenges they face in the book are not imaginable, and absolutely crazy. I can't believe that these things actually happened to people, that people would have the heart to do that to other human beings. If I was in his situation, I would just try and power through it like he did because if you don't, your life will be way worse.

  21. I am reading Night by Elie Wiesel and the challenges he had to face in this book were extremely unfair and cruel. There is not much that Elie can do about everything that's happening to him right now, so he is forced to live with it because its better than being shot. If I was in Elie's situation I would probably be dead by now because number one I'm a girl, and number two I don't think I could stand out in the cold with no clothes on.

  22. I am reading a long way gone and a challenge the main character Ishmael faces is trauma from the war. Ishmael is a young boy who has seen terrible things that no 12-year-old should have to see he has seen his friends die and he saw his family die. I can't imagine the toll this would have on him especially knowing that he is only twelve and struggling every day to survive. he deals with this problem by waking up every day and fighting to survive to make his family and friends proud.

  24. I am reading A Long Way Gone and the adversity that Ishmael is facing is the civil war that's going on in his country. He is just a boy on his own trying to survive. Although he is still apart of groups at times I would say he is still fending for himself. He can't trust no one not even the people he knows because as we read further and find out what he turned into we know what the bad things the Rebels can do to people. I don't know if I'd ever be able to survive as long as him so far if at all in these terrible times and conditions.

  26. I read the book Night Elie is the man character in the story he went through lots of challenges like getting taken from his house and getting taken to the camps were they got all there stuff taken away and the family's got separated. He did not let his dad get taken away from him. when his dad was getting weak he started using his food to feed his dad to keep him alive. they were put on train cars and most of them died on the train rides 100 people in a car and by the next stop there was only 12 people that walked off the train. they had no shoes on and it was cold and snowing so cold kill most of the people. If I was in Elie's place I would of do the same thing but I would try to get more food so that way you could keep yourself health and not hungry still be able to help your dad so he does not died in the camps.

    2. You explained Elie’s struggles really well especially how he was taken from his home and separated from his family. The way you described him taking care of his dad shows how important their bond was even in such terrible conditions. You also did a good job explaining how deadly the train rides and cold weather were. Your answer shows that you understand how hard survival was and that you would try to help your family while staying strong yourself.

  27. In I Am Malala, her father, who I would consider a main character, faced a lot of hardships in his childhood and adult life. He was disliked by his father because he had a stutter, but he was also never shown much love from his father as a child either with impacts a person's life as they grow up. He also had a very hard time trying to go to college and start his school. He had a hard time starting his school because he did not have much money to start one and, in his culture, it is rude to turn away guests and say no to them so they must give them whatever they want which is costly. Also, when he and his wife had their first child, it died because the environment they were living in was unsanitary. The character handled these hardships well and just kept trying to find new ways to get what he wanted, he never stopped trying. If this was me, I would not want to deal with these things, I would most likely give up and do something else that is easier

  28. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam faces many challenges, especially being forced into an abusive marriage with Rasheed. He controls her, treats her badly, and blames her when she cannot have children. Mariam handles these struggles by being patient and strong, even when life is unfair to her. Later, her friendship with Laila helps her find courage and purpose.
If I were in Mariam’s situation, I would try to get help or escape instead of suffering alone. I would want to protect myself and the people I care about. Mariam’s story shows that strength can come from hard life and standing up for others.

Instead of listening Malala starts speaking out and fighting for not only herself but other girls as well. I find the Taliban's rules to be mind blowing, because in the U.S. all kids are forced to have an education and complain about going to school. If I was in Malala's situation I don't know that I would be able to speak out against the Taliban just because of how strong they are. If I were Malala I would ask my dad to educate me because he is literally a teacher.

She deals with fear and the loss of her normal life including having her education threatened. Even though these hardships are dangerous and stressful Malala handles them with courage. She continues to speak out for education and refuses to give up on what she believes is right, even when it puts her at risk. If I were in Malala’s situation, I honestly think it would be very hard to be as strong as she was. I would be scared and worried about my family’s safety. I would try to stay strong by supporting education in quieter ways at first, like helping others learn and not giving up on school if possible but besides that I don't know what I would do.

If i was asked out of all of the books i have ever read, what character sticks out to you the most, it would definitely be Elie, and the way he lives life with determination and hope.

    2. I agree with you. Elie’s focus on surviving one day at a time and staying strong for his father really shows how much endurance he had, and I think leaning on loved ones and holding onto hope would be the only way to get through something like that.

  39. In the book Night, Elie faces many different adversities, the first one being when he is removed from everything hes ever known, taken to a concentration camp by the Nazis, and separated from hsi mother and sister. He faces many hardships, the two main ones being hunger and simply trying to stay alive day after day. However, Elie never lets himself down. He fought until he had nothing left, even making sure his father makes it to see another day. If I were in Elies shoes, i would have given up the first time i felt pain, thinking there was no point, i would end up like the others at some point. Although, Elie thought otherwise. He cherished the time he has on earth, and made the best out of what he could.

  41. in the book night the main character faces many problem and hardships. one of the main one is having to leave his home and get loaded onto a train. he handles this very well by stay strong and helping others he wants to be strong for her siblings and wants her parents to know hes ok in the hard time that there going through. if i were the main character i would also try to be strong for people around me but i would also try to find a way out of the situation try to run from my house simply because i dont want other people to have that kind of control over me.

  43. In the book Kite Runner Amir faces many challenges like not being able to do anything as his best friend is being bullied or trying to get his dads approval. Amir doesn't try to face his problems but instead avoids them. If I was in Amirs shoes, I would try to help Hasaan and not worry so much about Baba's approval.

  45. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, a woman named Marium, goes through a lot as a child. Her mother treats her as if she's unwanted and her dad doesn't even want to be seen with her. Eventually, her mom ends up taking her own life and Marium must deal with the guilt of losing her mom. She was then forced to marry a random man, that is way older than her after just losing her mom. I feel like she handles these hardships pretty well. She never really complained about what would happen to her and just dealt with it. If I was in her situation, I don't think I would've handled it as well as her.

    1. I agree that i don't think i would be able to handle all the things she has to handle. I feel like i would try multiple ways to escape and try and get freed from my forced husband. I feel as though if she wasn't forced into the marriage she wouldn't have all these problems she has now.

  47. i am reading the book along way gone and Ishmael faced many challenges like being separated from his family during the war and trying to survive by himself and not get killed by the rebels and trying not to get killed when he is a solider in the war fighting at such a young age he kept going trough the war by doing a lot of drugs and watching war movies when they weren't fighting and if i were him i would try and run away or just refuse to fight and just work in the camp

  48. I'm reading the book a long way gone and i think that the way Ishmael faced hardships was being introduced to war at such a young age. the reason i think that is because i feel like to be able to handle war you have to want to serve or be mature enough or physically fit but i feel as if Ishmael had none of these and with that it just makes it quite amazing that he was able to come out of it and power through all of the grueling things he witnessed such as seeing people being blown up or be killed right in front of him or being on the brink oof death simply because he had to live off of mostly fruit in the forest. And I feel like if I was in his situation things would've gone alot different because i probably would have joined the rebels because i wouldn't want to deal with the concequenses of being against them and getting caught.

  49. I agree with you devin because i feel like he handled it very well given with how much he had to go through at such a young age in such little time and i feel as if i wouldnt be able to handle the trama myself.

  50. I'm reading the book Night by Elie, Elie faced a lot of hardships like getting forced to move out of his house and be a prisoner for Nazis because he is a Jew, Elie is forced to slave away in a work camp with his father at a very young age, he is forced to see his dad work beyond he can. if i was in Elie's shoes I would do exactly that he did. He focused on himself and his father. he prevented his father from dying and Elie managed to survive by the choices he made, he dad however did not make it.

    1. I agree with what you said. Elie went through a lot at such a young age, and I think focusing on himself and his father was the only way he could survive. Staying with his dad and making those choices really shows how strong he was, even though his father didn’t make it in the end.

  51. I am reading the book A Thousand Splendid Suns and Miriam faces a lot of adversity with being forced into marriage with a man a lot older than her. She has to do everything the way Rasheed wants her to do, and she also is forced to act a certain way to make him satisfied with the marriage. Once she finds out she is pregnant he starts to ac a little different towards her, that is until she ends up miscarrying their child. He then treats her with anger and is never happy with what she does and says she messes everything little thing up.

    1. Reading about Mariam’s experience in A Thousand Splendid Suns made me feel really angry and sad for her. Being forced into a marriage with someone much older and then having to change everything about herself just to keep him satisfied feels extremely unfair. What stood out to me the most was how Rasheed treated her differently when she became pregnant, only to turn cruel again after she miscarried, as if the loss was somehow her fault. It made me realize how powerless Mariam is in her situation and how damaging that kind of treatment can be. If I were in her place, I don’t know how I would handle it, but it made me appreciate how strong she is for surviving everything she goes through.

  52. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam and Laila face many challenges that are completely out of their control, including war, loss, and abusive relationships. Mariam grows up feeling unwanted and later suffers through a harsh marriage, while Laila loses her family and is forced to make painful decisions just to stay alive. They handle these struggles by adapting and finding strength where they can, especially through their friendship with each other. Their bond helps them survive situations that would otherwise feel unbearable. If I were in their position, I don’t think I would know exactly what to do, but I would try to rely on people I trust the same way they do, because having support seems necessary when everything else is taken away.

  53. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael struggles a lot during this time in his life. He has to deal with losing his family, getting addicted to drugs, fighting in wars, and all the mental and physical pain some people cant even imagine. He has trouble dealing with his nightmares and migraines due to all the trauma from the way and the drug withdrawals. If I was in his position I don't know how I could get through all of the struggles he went through especially at such a young age.

  54. In Night, Eliezer faces many hardships such as being separated from his family, dealing with hunger, and being treated unfairly in the concentration camps. These challenges are both physical and emotional because he is trying to survive while also struggling with his faith and hope. Elie handles these struggles by staying close to his father, following orders, and focusing on getting through each day. Even when things are very hard, he keeps going because his father depends on him. If I were in his situation, I think I would try to do the same by staying close to people I trust and doing whatever I could to survive.

  55. i am reading The Kite Runner, Amir’s biggest challenge is his feelings. He wants his father’s approval and feels jealous of Hassan. Amir struggles because he is scared to stand up for himself and for Hassan. When things get hard, he stays quiet instead of doing the right thing. This makes him feel guilty later. If I were Amir, I would try to be braver and stand up for my friend, even though it would be hard.
